Atahualpa fue el último soberano inca, aunque no alcanzó a coronarse oficialmente como tal. Su padre, Huayna Cápac, murió en torno a 1525; y el sucesor de este, Ninan Cuyuchi, murió el mismo día. Esto dio lugar a la sangrienta guerra civil incaica por la sucesión entre Atahualpa y su hermano Huáscar.
Atahualpa was the last Inca sovereign, although he did not manage to be officially crowned as such. His father, Huayna Cápac, died around 1525; and his successor, Ninan Cuyuchi, died the same day. This gave rise to the bloody Inca civil war over succession between Atahualpa and his brother Huáscar.
