Put the verbs in parentheses in Past Perfect or Past Simple:

After John and Ted finished their breakfast, they grabbed their bags and went to the river to fish.

At 4 o'clock they didn't get any fish, so they decided to go home.

The kids didn't want to fish at all, but they promised their mother to bring fish for dinner, so Ted looked for a store where they could buy something, but the stores were already closed by that time. When they got home, they told their mother that they caught the biggest fish they had ever seen but had escaped ...
