The Independence of Colombia was the historical process that allowed the emancipation of Colombia from the Spanish Empire, ending the colonial period. This process was fought in the midst of a conflict developed during the first quarter of the nineteenth century to emancipate the territory then known as the United Provinces of Nueva Granada. This was part of the Spanish-American wars of independence, a series of struggles arisen in America motivated by the French invasion of Spain in 1808, which was part of the Napoleonic wars in Europe.
