ambos significan había/habían 
there was + sustantivo singular (tiempo pasado para singular)
there were + sustantivo plurarl (tiempo pasado para plural )

there was a pencil on the table (había un lápiz en la mesa)
there were pencils on the table (habían lapices en la mesa)
