A wolf had drowned in an animal it had killed, when suddenly a small bone in the flesh stabbed into his throat and he was unable to swallow it.
He soon felt horrible pain in his throat, and ran up and down moaning and groaning and looking for something to ease the pain. He tried to induce everyone he knew to extract the bone.
"I would give anything," he said, "if you want to do it."
At last the crane agreed to try, and told the wolf to lie on his side and open his jaws as wide as he could.
Then the crane put its long neck down the Wolf's throat, and with its beak loosened the bone, until it finally pulled it out.
"Could you give me the reward you promised?" Said the Crane.
The Wolf smiled and bared his teeth and said, "Be happy. You have put your head into a Wolf's mouth and brought it back safely; that should be reward enough for you."
Gratitude and greed do not go together.
