The town of Huancayo is the capital of Huánuco region and is located in the central part of Peru. It has a population of approximately one hundred thousand inhabitants. The name Huancayo comes from the Quechua word for silver. It's also called the 'Rose of the Andes.' Huancayo is known for its architecture, religious traditions, and cultural events. It's also an important market for agricultural products such as potatoes, avocados, and onions.

According to legend, Huancayo was founded by two brothers named Chupas and Chumpas. They abandoned their home after a disagreement with their father and set out on their own. Plants began to grow where they stopped to rest. They named this spot Huancayo, which means 'place where they stopped.' Over time, the name Huancayo came to mean 'the place with silver.' In addition to being a market town, Huancayo is also an administrative center for the region. It has a university, hospital, military garrison, social services, and a prison.

Huancayo is famous for its churches and plazas. The most famous plaza is the Plaza de Armas or Avocado Square because of its Avocado (or Alauca) tree. This tree is around 100 years old and stands out due to its size and pinkish-white bark. In addition to being beautiful, the bark of an avocado tree helps prevent skin disorders caused by exposure to sunrays; it's even used in medicinal treatments. There are many other churches in the town that are worth seeing, including Santa Rosa de Lima cathedral, San Agustin church, and San Francisco church. All these churches have important religious traditions in Huánuco region.

The main attraction in winter is skiing at Huarnapis ski area twenty minutes away from town with an altitude of 3200 meters above sea level. This area has five run-off pistes that range from beginner to expert levels with a total length of 18 km. There's also a hotel where you can stay overnight at very reasonable prices compared to other ski areas in Peru. There's plenty of space at the lodge for making meals for yourself or hiring a chef if you'd like to eat at the lodge instead of cooking your food at home.

Huancayo is an important market town with beautiful churches and plazias. It's also known as the 'Rose of the Andes' due to its beauty when illuminated by car headlights at night. The town is popular among tourists during summer and winter because it has good skiing conditions during both seasons.
