Medieval Markets
Medieval markets in England opened at 6:00 in the
moming. Housewives shopped before the first meal of
the day at 9:00 AM. The market at Nottingham was very
noisy. Vendors shouted the names of their products: live
chickens, pigs, fruit, vegetables, medical potions, etc.
The vendors were always very insistent. Most markets
closed at 3:00 PM. On Saturday the markets closed at
noon. Sunday was the day of rest. There were no markets or stores open on Sundays.
To this day, stores in small towns in Britain close early on one day of the week and do
not open at all on Sundays.
