Frida Kahlo was a famous Mexican artist who had a very hard life

Frida was born in Mexico on July 6, 1907. When Frida was six years old, she got pollo. Pollo is a terrible disease. She stayed in bed for nine months. After she got better, she walked with a limp because polio hurt her right leg and foot.

In 1922, Frida became a student at the National Preparatory School, one of the best schools in Mexico. She was one of a few female students in the school and loved to wear many colorful clothes and jewelry

When she was eighteen years old, she got in a very bad bus accident. She suffered many serious injuries from the accident. While she recovered, she discovered her love for painting

Although she eventually recovered from the accident, she spent the rest of her life in pain and a lot of time in bed. During this time, Frida completed many of her paintings.

Frida finished her first painting one year after the accident. It was a painting of herself. This is called 'Self-portrait.

In 1929 she married the painter Diego Rivera. The next year they moved to New York, but Frida wasn't happy there. They returned to Mexico in 1935.

Frida won a national art prize in 1946, and she became famous in Mexico. She died in 1954, when she was only 47 years old.
