Rodrigo Santoro Biography

Rodrigo Junqueira dos Reis Santoro was born on August 22, 1975 in the city of Petrópolis (Rio de Janeiro), in Brazil. His father Francesco is an Italian engineer, while his mother Maria José is a plastic artist born in Brazil.

Rodrigo studied Communication at the Pontificia Universidade Católica do Rio de Janeiro, and during that time spent a year at the Atores da Rede Globo Office hoping to start a career in acting.

Like many other South American colleagues, Santoro started as a soap opera beau before making the leap to the cinema, in 2001, with "Detrás del sol" and "Bicho de Sete Cabeças", a film by Hector Babenco, winner of almost 40 national and international awards among which Rodrigo won six of them in the Best Actor category. Previously, in 1999, he had lent his voice to the protagonist of "Stuart Little", in the Brazilian version of this production, a work that he repeated in the 2002 sequel, "Stuart Little 2".

Then came "Carandirú" (2003) and his first two Hollywood projects: "Los Ángeles de Charlie: Al limita" (2003) and "Love Actually" (2003).

Santoro continued his work in Brazil before being chosen to play Xerxes in "300" (2006)

Between 2006 and 2007, his face became known to millions of followers of the series "Perdidos (Lost)", when he played the role of Paulo in the third season of the famous television series.

Shortly after, he began working under the direction of Steven Soderbergh, in the biopic that he made about the life of the famous guerrilla and revolutionary Ernesto Che Guevara. In it, released in two parts with the titles "Che, the Argentine" (2008) and "Guerrilla" (2009); Rodrigo played Raúl Castro, brother of the Cuban leader Fidel Castro.

In recent years Santoro has cemented his career in titles like "Phillip Morris, I love you!" (2009), "Just graduated" (2009), "Rio" (2009), "You will find dragons" (2011) and "What to expect when you are waiting" (2012).

Currently the Brazilian actor is involved in three film projects, in different stages of filming and production. They are "The Last Stand" (2013), action thriller where he will work alongside Arnold Schwarzenegger, Forest Whitaker and Eduardo Noriega; "The Blind Bastard Club" (2012), romantic film that Santoro stars with Rosario Dawson and Lenny Kravitz; and, finally, "300: Battle of Artemisia", a sequel to "300", in which he returns to give life to the character of Xerxes.
