Fíjate en el tiempo de los verbos de la frase. Si un verbo de la frase incompleta está en pasado probablemente la solución esté relacionada con el pasado simple.

Pero, si por el contrario, te encuentras con un verbo con -ing y esa situación está ocurriendo en ese mismo momento, la solución podría ser pasado continuo.
