One night on Halloween

One night on Halloween
It was quiet on the platform. Only the wind drove a few leaves in front of it. The lights of the last night train grew smaller until the darkness swallowed them. A shadow flitted across the floor and a man in a long leather coat stepped to the edge of the platform. He let his eyes wander. Abandoned.
"Let's go, then," he said, and walked to the stairs. Footsteps echoed off the walls as he descended the steps. There was no one to be seen in the station concourse. Only the headlights of a car could he make out in the distance.
He stepped briskly to the elevator that took passengers to Track 3 during the day. As he flipped the switch, the glass doors immediately slid open in front of him. Now he had to act quickly.
In the glare of the cabin's light, he could effortlessly make out the screws on the switch panel. He quickly unscrewed one after the other and carelessly dropped them. There was a tinkling sound as soon as the metal fell to the floor next to his feet. Otherwise, only the soft hum of the lighting could be heard. Even the whistling of the wind had blocked out the doors. Good thing. The silence gave him the concentration he needed for his work.
The last screw fell. With a jerk, he opened the elevator's control panel. Countless wires emerged from underneath.
"Perfect," he muttered. With that, he broke the silence for two breaths.
He dropped the screwdriver into the pocket of his coat and retrieved a pair of slender pliers from it.
"Let's see then ..." Under the pressure of the cutting edge, one of the wires gave way with a click. Shortly after, another popped apart. He then grabbed the pliers away and fished an insulated wire out of his pants pocket. A blue light glowed in the middle of the wire. He contemplated the light for a moment before wrapping the metal ends around each other with practiced grips.
"Voilà!" The first step was accomplished.
He hung the control panel back in place. He ignored the screws as well as the blue glow that now penetrated through the cracks.
He pressed the button that had a down arrow on it. Nothing happened. When he pressed the button a second time, the glaring lights of the elevator went out. After another button press, blue lights danced across the walls behind the glass fronts.
"Time for the finale." His fingers slid over the arrow, tracing the shape engraved in the metal. Then he pressed the button deep into its hollow. He counted to ten, held his breath, and released the button.
There was a rattle in the elevator shaft. With a squeak, the car began to move. Layers of earth slid past him as the elevator accelerated and sank into the depths.
Finally. Relieved to be himself again, he undid the buttons of the coat and let it slide off his shoulders. As the leather touched the floor, the car slowed and stopped. The doors slid apart without a sound.
Mist wafted into the elevator. The smell of sweet blossoms and mustiness rose to his nose as the warm air enveloped him.
Smiling, he stepped out, straightening to his full height. The sound of tearing fabric rang out. Then his wings sped apart and scattered black feathers sailed to the ground.
A few breaths later, the silence was gone. Chains rattled, bells tinkled, and a delicate melody danced around the haze. Silhouetted figures became visible between the wisps of mist.
The guard took a step to the side, clearing the way into the cabin. A centaur with a silver fox riding on its back, a pair of vampires, warbling fairies, chain-wielding rat creatures, three unicorns and many more entered. As soon as the blue light inside the elevator touched their skin, they became sparks of light themselves. Yellow, green, purple, red, and every color imaginable floated between the glass walls.
As the last stragglers transformed, the guard entered the booth. He pressed the button with the arrow pointing up. The doors closed and with a jolt the elevator shot upward until it stopped abruptly.
The doors slid apart, cold air swirling into the cabin. The creatures poured out onto track 3. Only the guard stayed behind, watching them go. "Sweet dreams," he whispered into the night. He stood proudly on the platform, waiting for the dreams to return at dawn.
