Truman issued Executive Order 9835, also known as the Loyalty Order, which mandated that all federal employees be analyzed to determine whether they were sufficiently loyal to the government. These measures also reached the entertainment industry where many librettists, directors and actors were put on the blacklist that did not allow them to work directly in the industry, so many worked with pseudonyms or substitute workers. Political activists linked to leftist parties were imprisoned and some expelled or deported from the country.
