MAHATMA GANDHI
Mahatma Gandhi was born in India in 1869. His mother was one of the greatest influences in his
life, she taught him the advantages of vegetarianism, respect for others and tolerance for
different ways of thinking and other religions of the rest of the world.
He served in the army, where after witnessing the horrors and violence of war, he decided to
start his campaign for nonviolence and pacifism. During his campaign he was arrested several
times, although he was quickly released.
In South Africa he organized an ambulance corps, led a section of the Red Cross and founded
some cooperatives for the defense of the rights of Indians, and then returned to India.
In his native country he managed to get millions of poor and illiterate Indians to form a massive
movement to oust the British Empire from the government of India.
