Comparative adjectives are followed by than to compare two things.

My grandfather is older than my father.

Superlative adjectives follow the and compare one thing with two or more similar things.

To form comparatives for most short adjectives, add -er. To form superlatives for most short adjectives, add -est.

  • for regular, short adjectives, add -er/-est. short ➫ shorter ➫ the shortest
  • for short adjectives ending in -e, add -r/-st. safe ➫ safer ➫ the safest
  • for short adjectives ending in -y, change the -y to -i and add -er/-est. noisy ➫ noisier ➫ the noisiest
  • for short adjectives ending in consonant-vowel-consonant, double the final consonant and add -er/-est. big ➫ bigger ➫ the biggest

To form comparatives for most longer adjectives, use more. To form superlatives for most longer adjectives, use the most.
