1. pregunta n the last two decades of the 20th. century and during the first years of the present one, mathematical education has experienced a very important development, both quantitative as qualitative in nature. This advance, nevertheless, has taken place mostly in a purely theoretical scope, without significant consequences for great sectors of the population. The explanation of this phenomenon could reside, fundamentally, in the scarce communication between classroom teachers and the "theoreticians" of mathematical education. Also we could consider that, through their pre-service and in-service preparation, teachers have not received enough information about appropriate didactical strategies for mathematical teaching and learning at the schools. The present article tries to approach some very important aspects related to the new developments and points of view on strategies for mathematical education through the different levels of the educative system. The article begins with a detailed consideration of the complexity of mathematical teaching. Later, a set of elements inherent to the methods and specific contents of mathematics are discussed, followed by a reflection on some points related to the didactical principles which characterize modern mathematical education. Finally, seven different conceptions for the development of the teaching and learning processes of this discipline are presented.
