The story is about His Japanese breeder sends a puppy of the Akita breed that his Japanese trainer sends to the United States upon request. But when transporting the dog, the cage falls off the vehicle and goes to a train station. There, a college professor named Parker Wilson (Richard Gere) finds the dog lost and slightly injured.

The days pass and nobody claims the puppy, and neither finds who wants to adopt it. Professor Parker is very fond of the pet, but his wife is opposed to being left with her, until a pleasant bond was created between the pet and the teacher, and his wife, seeing how loving her husband was with the puppy. He finally agreed to stay with them.

After days of play and mutual affection, the teacher and the puppy established a very strong bond, to the point that when he had to go to work, "hachi", as he called his puppy, accompanied him every day to the station . to train. When he saw that his owner was disappearing in the crowd, he was waiting for him at the same station until they returned from work, they met to walk home together.

Paker had tried by all means to keep his pet at home while he went to work, but nothing worked, the dog ended up escaping to accompany him to the train station and from there he did not move until his owner finished his workday and I went. Return to the station.

One day, teaching at the university, Professor Parker suffered a heart attack and died. His dog was waiting for him at the station, until a family member took him home. Despite this, the next day, Hachi escapes and returns to the station to wait for his teacher, when he sees that he does not arrive, he spends the day and night there.
