According to SEMARNAT, natural disasters have increased greatly during the last decade, which has resulted in a significant increase in victims and material damage.

The definition of natural disaster is any catastrophic event caused by nature or natural processes on earth.

The severity of a disaster is measured in loss of life, economic loss, and the population's capacity to rebuild. Events that occur in unpopulated areas are not considered disasters.

Thus, a flood on a desert island would not count as a disaster, but a flood on a populated area is called a natural disaster.
