Reported speech is used when we want to repeat what a person said. When we use it, some changes are needed.

We use the introductory verb say in the past tense, and we change all the verbs one tense back.

Present simple →

“I want to live abroad,” said Mario. → Mario said he wanted to live abroad.

Present continuous →

“I’m going to the beach,” said Kathy. → Kathy said she was going to the beach.

Will →

“They will take me to school,” said Rob. → Rob said they would take him to school.

Can →

“I can speak two languages,” said Jessica. → Jessica said she could speak two languages.

Pronouns and possessive adjectives:

“I need to buy my uniform,” said George. → George said he needed to buy his uniform.

Demonstrative pronouns:

“This house is very big,” said Monica. → Monica said that house was very big.

“I don’t like these shoes,” said Kim. → Kim said she didn’t like those shoes.

Adverbs and adverbial phrases:

here → there

today → that day

yesterday → the day before

tomorrow → the next day, the day after

next day/week/month/year → the following day/week/month/year
