The main occupations of a miner include drilling the rock with spikes and shovels or using power tools to extract the ore, propping tunnels with wooden supports to prevent them from collapsing, deploying tracks to transport the stone or loading the ore into wagons for its transport abroad.
Miners sometimes perform ancillary functions such as creating tunnels for passage or ventilation, excavating rooms or wells to facilitate extraction activity.1
The work of a miner inside the mine is hard. Firstly, they are deprived of sunlight so they should be lit with lamps attached to their helmets. Secondly, it is a dirty job as the mineral dust impregnates the clothes, the hair and the skin of the workers. Mining work requires significant physical effort and is not without risk. In many cases they must work in forced positions or travel long distances inclined or knees to reach the vein. On the other hand, they are often exposed to landslides or rocks that can cause small fractures to death by crushing. Miners can also cause slashes and amputations when working with cutting tools. Finally, they may suffer from silicosis, a disease caused by prolonged inhalation of chemical compounds that irreversibly affects the lungs and makes breathing difficult.
