Educating for the future
In the Republic of Somaliland, one of the world's poorest and least-educated countries, only 50% of the children attend school.
But now. Abaarso, an English-language boarding school, is showing the nation the power of education.
Abaarso's founder is Jonathan Starr, an American man who wants to make
a difference after earning millions of dollars in the finance industry. While he grew up, Starr heard a lot about Somaliland from his aunt's Somali husband. Finally visiting the country in 2008 with his uncle, Starr decided to establish what he called a "great school". Despite the many challenges
he faced while he was building Abaarso School, it opened in 2009.
It's a demanding place, with classes five-and-a-half days a week, 11 months a year - all in English, a language most students didn't know before starting at Abaarso. The school's mission is to prepare students for university, so they can become leaders at home in areas such as healthcare, law, technology and government. And it has succeeded beyond Starr's dreams. In 2013, almost 90% of the first graduating class recieved scholarships to elite universities, including Cambridge, Harvard and Yale. Those university graduates that are already back home work to improve life in Somaliland. And now, because of the high demand for places at Abaarso, Starr is hoping to open additional schools.
