Before the law there is a guardian. A farmer appears in front of this guardian, and requests that he be allowed to enter the Law. But the guardian replies that he cannot let him in for now. The man reflects and asks if they will let him in later.
"Maybe," says the sentry, "but not for now."
The door to the Law is open, as usual; when the guard moves aside, the man leans in to spy. The guardian sees him, smiles and says:
-If your desire is so great, try to enter despite my prohibition. But remember that I am powerful. And I'm just the last of the guardians. Between room and room there are also guardians, each more powerful than the other. Already the third guardian is so terrible that I can't even look at him.
The farmer had not foreseen these difficulties; The Law should always be accessible to all, he thinks, but when he looks at the guardian, with his fur coat, his large, aquiline nose, his black tartar beard, thin and black, he decides that it is better for him to wait. The guard gives him a footstool and allows him to sit next to the door.
There wait days and years. Try infinitely to enter and fatigue the guardian with his pleas. Often the guardian talks briefly with him, asks him questions about his country and about many other things; but they are indifferent questions, like those of the great lords, and finally he always repeats that he cannot let him in. The man, who has provided himself with many things for the trip, sacrifices everything, however valuable, to bribe the guardian. He accepts everything, in effect, but tells him:
-I accept it so you don't think you've missed any effort.
During those long years, the man observes almost continuously the guardian: he forgets the others and it seems to him that this is the only obstacle that separates him from the Law. He curses his bad luck, during the first years boldly and loudly; later, as he ages, he only mutters to himself. He returns to childhood, and as in his careful and long contemplation of the guardian he has come to know even the fleas of his skin neck, he also begs the fleas to help him and convince the guardian. Finally, his eyesight weakens, and he no longer knows if there really is less light, or if only his eyes deceive him. But in the middle of the darkness it distinguishes a glow, which emerges inextinguishably from the door of the Law. He has little time left to live. Before he dies, all the experiences of those long years are confused in his mind in a single question, which he has not yet asked. He beckons the guardian to approach, since the rigor of death begins to harden his body. The guardian is forced to stoop a lot to talk to him, because the disparity of heights between the two has increased considerably over time, to the detriment of the peasant.
-What do you want to know now? asks the guardian. You're insatiable.
"Everyone strives to reach the Law," says the man; How is it possible then that for so many years no one but me intended to enter?
The guardian understands that man is about to die, and so that his faint senses perceive his words, he says next to his ear in a thunderous voice:
-No one could pretend because this entry was only for you. Now I will close it.
