How to Write Your Host Family Letter
Travel Tip
All language program participants whose program includes an Xperitas family stay are required to complete the Family Stay Application, including an an introductory letter and two photos. We share these materials with our Family Stay Coordinators abroad, and the coordinators use them to help match participants with a host family that may have similar interests or students the same age. The more information you share, the more helpful it is for our coordinators! Your “Dear Host Family” letter is the first impression your host family will have of you. Show them that you’ve made an effort to share your life with them! Here are some guidelines to help you make a great first impression on your host family:
Start with the basics. Describe where you live, your family members, your parents’ occupations, subjects you study, your extra-curricular activities, your job, your favorite music, movies and food.
Be honest and genuine – they want to get to know the real you! Pose questions to them and ask them what they like to do and what their daily life is like.
Make sure your letter isn’t too short. If your letter is less than 6 sentences, it is probably too short. Try taking the topic of each sentence and elaborating on it. If you mentioned that you like to read, why not share a few titles of your favorite books? (Make sure your letter isn’t too long, either! Please limit it to 3 pages.)
End your letter by thanking your family for hosting you and letting them know how excited you are to meet them.
Have your teacher look over the first draft of your letter and correct any spelling or grammar errors.
Scan or save your letter as a PDF to submit online.
Note: Unacceptable letters and photos will be returned by Xperitas.
