Save Money, Energy, and the Planet

There are many different ways in which you can save money and energy, and protect the planet along the way. Here are some methods and habits you could adopt to do so.

It may not be obvious, but when you consume less power, you reduce the amount of toxic fumes that are released by power plants; this protects ecosystems from destruction and conserves the Earth’s natural resources.

You don’t necessarily need to buy “energy saving” products to begin to save energy, instead you may want to start by turning off lights or appliances when you don’t need them. You could also hang your clothes to dry instead of using a dryer. You may want to save up some money and buy energy efficient bulbs, they are more expensive at first, but they halogen, fluorescent, and LED bulbs may consume 25% to 80% less electricity and they could last 25 times longer than traditional bulbs.

You may want to become “zero waste”. When people talk about zero waste, they refer to a set of guidelines you could follow to prevent generating waste by reusing products. This way, less (or no) trash will be sent to landfills, oceans, and incinerators. Currently, only about 9% of all plastic is recycled. If you decide to go zero waste, you may be surprised about the price of certain items; for example, a reusable water bottle could cost you anywhere from 250 to 800 pesos, but remember that the main principle of zero waste is to reuse what you have.

Ideally, reusable items are a one-time purchase. You may think that it is too much money, but when you add up the cheap, disposable things you buy over and over again, you will notice that you are actually spending more money.

Some things that you may have at home and you could reuse in order to begin your zero waste journey are:

-Rags, cloth towels, and cloth napkins – you could use these to replace paper towels and napkins.

-Plastic soda bottles, gallon jugs, and other plastic containers – with some modifications, you could turn these into useful items like a plastic bottle broom, bird feeders, food bins, dustpans, shoe cubbies, self-watering flowerpots, and many other useful things.

-Newspapers, magazines, and paper bags – there are many ways to repurpose paper. You may want to get creative and make woven baskets or trays using old magazines and newspapers. Newspapers, paper bags, and magazines may also be used as wrapping paper and you could even make envelopes.

-Plastic bags - You may want to save the inner bag of the cereal box when it is empty. You could wash it, dry it, and then cut it to wrap sandwiches. You can also reuse the bags as trash bags.

Just like these ideas, there are many more things you can do to save energy, money, and the planet. What actions will you take today?
