3. Coding of COVID-19 mortality with ICD-10
Both categories, U07.1 (COVID-19, identified virus) and U07.2 (COVID-19, unidentified virus) are suitable for coding the cause
of death. Similarly, new codes were created for ICD-11.
COVID-19 is reported on a death certificate like any other cause of death, the rules for selecting the underlying cause of
deaths are the same as for influenza (COVID-19 is not due to any other cause).
To fill out / complete a death certificate, no special guidance is required. Respiratory infection can progress to
pneumonia that can progress to respiratory failure and other consequences. Potentially contributing comorbidity (problem
of the immune system, chronic diseases ...) is reported in part 2, and other aspects (perinatal, maternal ...) in table B of the model
international death certificate or additional information from the local form / format, in accordance with the rules for completion.
A special manual verification is recommended for certificates where COVID-19 is reported, in particular for certificates where COVID-19 is reported.
reported COVID-19 but it was not selected as the underlying cause of death.
