The first conditional is used to present future scenarios whose realization is very probable. Therefore, it is suitable for expressing plans.

First conditional: grammatical structure

  • Option 1: If + Condition (sentence with verb in present simple) + (sentence with infinitive verb) will / won't  + Result .
  • Option 2: Result  + will / won't + (sentence with infinitive verb)  + if + Condition (sentence with verb in present simple).
  • This conditional can also be formed using other modal verbs instead of will, such as may, should, can.

Examples of first conditional

1. I will stay at home if it rains this afternoon.

2. If my brother goes abroad, I will be very worried.

3. You won't earn enough money if you don't work more hours.
