On October 24, 1929, when the stock market had not yet opened, readers of The New York Times had breakfast reading that a Wall Street crash was an "impossible disaster." Hours later, prices fell 11%. The next day La Vanguardia titled with a laconic “Stock Market Oscillations”. But fifteen days later those swings had turned into a disaster of almost 50%. By 1932, more than three-quarters of the value of public companies had evaporated.
In a short time, hundreds of thousands of people, many of them modest savers, learned two things: the first, that “everything that goes up, goes down” can be cruelly true; the second, that something as abstract as the stock market and financial activity can directly or indirectly affect, and in what way, people's lives. The impact of the crash was so great that that crisis, 90 years later, has taken on the form of a legend. Black legend, yes.
