Rules of accentuation in Catalan
Monosyllabic words are not accented (except for those with a diacritical accent that you can see in this lesson).
Acute words (the stressed syllable is the last of the word) are stressed if they end in a vowel, vowel followed by -s, in -en or -in.
Examples: català (Catalan), però (but), també (also), només (solo), Dublin (Dublin)
Plain words (the penultimate syllable is the tonic) are stressed if they do not end in any of the previous endings.
Examples: tònic (tonic), àton (unstressed), exàmens (exams)
All esdrújulas words are always stressed (the third to last syllable is the tonic) and all sobreesdrújulas words (the stressed syllable is before the third to last).
Examples: tonic (tonic), grammar (grammar)
Only adverbs ending in -ment that are formed from a word that is stressed are accented.
Examples: ràpid (fast) → ràpidament (quickly), easy (easy) → easily (easily)
