Due to the generating forces of the rock cycle, tectonic plates, and the water cycle, rocks cannot keep themselves in balance and are forced to change in new environments. The rock cycle is a model that explains how the three types of rocks come from some other, and how the process changes one type to another over time. The time for a rock to complete the phases is millions of years, and in the life of Earth not all rocks can complete it.
