Tommo remembers how Big Joe loved all animals, he used to feed the mice in the cupboard, but Grandma Wolf got angry at Big Joe for doing it. She tried to kill all the mice in the cupboard, but she only ever managed to kill one. Tommo remembers that the mouse that had been caught by Grandma Wolf had the biggest funeral a mouse had ever had. Then for Big Joe's birthday Molly finds Big Joe a lovely feildmouse. Molly, Charlie and Tommo make him promise not to tell Grandma Wolf. But sadly, somehow Grandma Wolf finds out about his pet mouse, and kills it, along with all of his other beloved animals; his slow worms, his hedgehog and others of his animal collection. Molly, Charlie and Tommo began to illegally poach on the Colonel's land. Molly and Charlie enjoyed skinny dipping in his lake, and Tommo eventually came in on the second or third time because he felt he was missing out. Molly told their future with stones, and the stones said that as long as they were together, they would always have good luck. At the end of the chapter, Charlie and Tommo find out that Molly is sick with scarlet fever, and she is not allowed to see them, and they are not allowed to see her, and are shooed away by her parents.
