Jacinto Convit García (Caracas, September 11, 1913-Ib., May 12, 2014) was a renowned Venezuelan doctor and scientist, whose achievements are indisputable: campaign to eliminate leper colonies in Venezuela, raise awareness about the diseases he hoped to prevent; strive to improve the care offered to affected patients; insist that patients be treated more humanely; and generate a sense of urgency in efforts to control and cure neglected diseases. He received the Prince of Asturias Award for Scientific and Technical Research in 1987.
He was born in Caracas, in the populous parish of San José, on September 11, 1913, the son of a Venezuelan mother, Flora García Marrero, and a Spaniard of Barcelona origin, named Francisco Convit Marti, a naturalized Venezuelan. In the same way, he died at the age of 100 in his hometown on May 12, 2014.
In 1932 he entered the School of Medicine of the Central University of Venezuela (UCV) where he obtained the title of Doctor of Medical Sciences in 1938. He specialized in dermatology in the United States. As a member of the medical team at the Cabo Blanco Leprosy Hospital (Vargas state), he devoted himself to clinical treatment against leprosy, while in collaboration with Dr. Martín Vegas, he began an educational campaign in the neighboring community on the central coast aimed at eradicating the collective belief that contagion of this disease by simply living with lepers. His growing experience in the treatment and investigation of leprosy allowed him to interact with other foreign specialists, arriving as a delegate from Venezuela to the Pan-American Leprosy Congress held in 1946 and the International Leprosy Congress that took place two years later, in 1948.3
After obtaining the position of dermatologist at the Vargas Hospital in Caracas, he joined the chair of dermatology of Professor Leopoldo Briceño Iragorry, being appointed instructor and director of his laboratory. Jacinto Convit held this position until 1950, when he was appointed head of the Dermatology Clinic.
In 1946, at the age of 33, he married Rafaela Marotta D'Onofrio, from Caracas and Italian by origin, with whom he had four children with whom they live: Francisco Convit, a businessman based in Caracas, dedicated to farming and who has had an outstanding career in horse racing, owning a stud and a stud farm; hobby and properties, which by the way, he shared with his father. Dr. Rafael J. Convit, plastic surgeon residing in Washington DC and Dr. Antonio Convit, professor and researcher at New York University. His son Oscar Convit died in 1978 and his wife in 2011.
