Dr. Jacinto Convit was born on September 11, 1913 from the union of Francisco Convit y Martí, a Catalan immigrant, and Flora García Marrero, a Venezuelan.

On September 19, 1932, he began his studies at the School of Medicine of the Central University of Venezuela. Five years later he received the degree of Bachelor of Philosophy, and opted for the title of Doctor of Medical Sciences presenting the work "Fractures of the Spine" in 1938.

However, his experience in the sanitary-epidemiological area began a year earlier when as a student he was invited by Martín Vegas, professor of dermatology at the Faculty of Medicine, and Carlos Gil Yépez to visit the Cabo Blanco leprosarium located in the Vargas department of the Federal District. Once he graduated he was appointed resident physician of that leprosarium, where he worked between 1940 and 1943.

He also served as ad honorem director of the Red Cross in La Guaira. He was always moved by the stigmatization suffered by patients suffering from leprosy, and worked for and with them.

Until 1942 their struggle consisted of the isolation and treatment of the sick in the so-called "leprocomios" that depended on the Directorate of Social Assistance of the Ministry of Health and Social Assistance (MSAS). Subsequently, he was medical director of the national leprosies, then medical director of the National Antileppo Services, and then chief physician of the Leprosy Division, with which he had the responsibility of organizing the entire national network of fight against leprosy.

His life was devoted to scientific research. One of his greatest achievements was the development of the leprosy vaccine in 1987. In addition, he contributed valuable advances to the knowledge of other infectious diseases, such as leshmaniasis, also managing to create a vaccine.

The last years of his life were dedicated by Dr. Convit to getting the cure against cancer. "It doesn't take away my dream of winning the Nobel Prize, but finding the cure for cancer," he said. His latest study was published in 2013 at the age of 100

His dedication and effort to medical science was recognized by the world in 1988, when he was nominated for the Nobel Prize in Medicine. Additionally, he was Director of the Collaborating Center for Reference and Research in Histological Identification and Classification of Leprosy (WHO) since 1971, member of the Council of the Faculty of Medicine since 1973 and of the Researcher Promotion System in 1994; and received the José Gregorio Hernández Award twice, the Medical Federation medal by the Pan American Health Organization, as well as the Prince of Asturias Award and the Legion of Honor in France.

The scientific health community loses an excellent doctor and better researcher. Before his departure we must celebrate and honor his life dedicated to working tirelessly for the health of Venezuelans.
