The problems that currently affect our planet are numerous. According to the UN, the degradation of ecosystems is already damaging the well-being of at least 3.2 billion people, representing 40% of the world's population. In addition, global warming, pollution and the disposal of waste, hinder access to livelihoods, and generate greater inequality and poverty throughout the world.
Faced with the urgency of taking action to restore our ecosystems, the United Nations is commemorating World Environment Day 2021 with the launch of the # GenerationRestoration movement, promoting actions that all people can take to join as agents of change.
In line with our commitment to achieve a more sustainable country with social justice, from CARE Peru we share actions that we can do from home to start taking better care of the environment:
1) Take care of the water
Water is the most important element for life; however, it is a limited resource that is becoming increasingly depleted. In the world there are more than 3 billion people without access to water. In Peru, according to the INEI, 94.8% of the population in urban areas has access to water while in rural areas only 76.3%.
However, due to the effects of climate change, water is decreasing in many areas of the country. For this reason, each person must assume a culture of saving and rational consumption. For example, we can take short showers of up to five minutes, avoid running the water when performing activities such as brushing teeth, shaving, washing hair, or lathering, and constantly check the toilet pipes and cisterns to fix any leaks. In rural areas, we must avoid washing vehicles directly in rivers or streams and keep taps closed.
2) Reduce energy consumption
In our daily life, and especially in the context of social isolation, we increasingly use electrical energy. This abuse of energy causes havoc on the balance of the environment. The higher the demand for energy, the more CO2 is released into the atmosphere. Likewise, hydroelectric projects are increasing to meet demand and strategic ecosystems in the country and also its populations are affected. Although we cannot stop climate change, we can reduce its impact with actions such as: changing common light bulbs for fluorescent lamps, making the most of natural light, unplugging electrical appliances that we do not use, and using energy-efficient appliances such as washing machines and refrigerators .
3) Recycle
Our planet is filling with solid waste that pollutes the air, soil and water. The use of plastic is taking its toll on the planet, as it ends up in the sea, forming polluting microplastic seas that diminish marine life and, therefore, the fishing resource. All of us can take care of the environment by separating our waste in different containers, whether they are organic, paper, plastic or glass. In addition, in many places in the city we can carry batteries or used cooking oil. Let's avoid the use of single-use plastic.
4) Make a responsible consumption
The society we live in encourages us to buy products that we don't really need and that take hundreds of years to degrade. Buy only the essentials and, if possible, choose items with packaging made from recyclable materials and without plastic.
Also, you can start eating organic foods that are free of pesticides. In this way, you take care of your health, you contribute to the economy of the producer families and the conservation of natural resources.
5) Create green areas
From home, we can contribute to the conservation of the biodiversity of our planet by growing trees or various species of plants, if we have a smaller space. Plants absorb carbon dioxide from the environment and transform it into oxygen, thus also improving the quality of air we breathe at home.
Our planet is the only home we have to live in and it is urgent that all of us take steps to protect it. By making small changes in our habits, together and together we can improve people's well-being and counteract the change cl
