Millions of people are already suffering from the catastrophic effects of extreme natural disasters exacerbated by climate change: from the prolonged droughts in sub-Saharan Africa to the devastating tropical storms sweeping across Southeast Asia, the Caribbean and the Pacific. In 2018 there were devastating fires and heat waves during the summer months in the northern hemisphere, from the Arctic Circle to Greece, Japan, Pakistan and the United States, which killed hundreds of people.
While we generally understand climate change in terms of the impact it will have on our natural environment, it is its devastating effects on humanity now and in the future that make it an urgent human rights issue. It will aggravate and magnify existing inequalities, and its effects will continue to spread and worsen over time, bringing the downfall of current and future generations. These are the reasons why the failure of governments to address climate change, despite compelling scientific evidence, could be the largest intergenerational human rights violation in history.
