An engine converts energy into mechanical work. This energy can come from different sources, for
example, water or steam.
Water turbines converts the energy of flowing water into mechanical work. They consist of large wheels
with blades or buckets and they are often used for generating electricity in dams. First, water under
pressure is released into a channel. Then, the water enters the turbines and hits the blades. The wheels
spin rapidly. This mechanical energy is transferred to a shaft to operate an electrical generator.
The steam engine is a machine that converts the energy of steam into mechanical energy. A steam engine
has got a boiler with two compartments. First, fuel –coal, oil or wood – is burnt in one compartment to
produce heat energy. Then, this heat energy heats the water in the other compartment and the water is
evaporated into steam. After that, the high-pressure steam moves one or more pistons. Pistons turn the
wheels of steam locomotives and operate the propellers or paddles of steamboats and they turn the shafts
of fixed machines too. The efficiency of a steam engine is not very high. Today, a lot of steam engines have
been replaced by steam turbines.
Steam engines use the pressure of steam. Steam turbines use the kinetic energy of flowing steam. A steam
turbine consists of stationary and rotating blades. First, high pressure steam enters the turbine. Then, the
stationary blades direct the steam onto the rotating blades and these turn the shafts. After that, the steam
moves to another stage of stationary and rotating blades. Turbines with several stages of blades can be
highly efficient. They are often used to operate electrical generators, ships and submarines.
