Marie Curie was born in Warsaw, Poland. Both her parents were teachers. They believed deeply in the importance of education. Marie had her first lessons in physics and chemistry from her father. She had a brilliant aptitude for study, but advanced study was not possible for women in Poland. Marie dreamed of studying at the Sorbonne in Paris, France, but her family didn't have the money to support her. To solve the problem, Marie worked and helped her elder sister, Bronya, to study medicine at the Sorbonne. When Bronya finished her studies she contributed to the cost of Marie's studies. When Marie was 24, she moved to Paris to study mathematics and physics. "It was like a new world opened to me, the world of science, which I was at last permitted to know in all liberty," she wrote. This moment was of decisive importance in her life.
