In March 2000 he started to climb with this father and his brother. He was only fourteen years old. It was a very slow and dangerous journey. They struggled in strong wind and deep snow. On 21st May 2000 they started the final part of the journey. They were tired and cold and they didn't have much food.
When they were only 50 metres from the top the weather suddenly became terrible. Then Temba stopped to tie his boots. He took off his gloves and his hand got frostbite. He hurried down the mountain and went to the hospital. But it was too late. He lost five fingers.
After that, some people were very angry. They didn't want children on a dangerous mountain. But Temba wanted to try again. So, in April 2001, Temba left his school again. His school friends and teachers clapped and cheered him. This time he didn't fail. He reached the top of the mountain on 23rd May. He was just sixteen years old - the first schoolboy to climb Mount Everest and the youngest person to do so.
What did Temba think when he reached the top? 'It was a great view. I remembered my friends and my family. It was cold and tiring but I didn't lose hope. And I succeeded! Now I'm going back to school.'
The Nepalese government gave Temba a Youth Excellence Award on 31st May 2001 which included a gold medal.
