Answer:

THE POTOSÍ MITA. AN UNCHANGED COLONIAL IMPOSITION WITHIN A CONTEXT OF MULTIPLE TRANSFORMATIONS (16th AND 17th CENTURIES; CHARCAS, VICEROYALTY OF PERU)

Explanation:

This article revisits the Potosí mita system and proposes that mita allotments remained unchanged during 1578-1610, a context signed by mining boom and many transformations within which the demographic decline, the absenteeism and the commutation of work for money stand out. The unchanged character of mita allotments is deduced by analyzing the repartimientos generales de mita established by the Viceroys of Peru between 1573 and 1633. In order to highlight the peculiar character of the unchanged mita allotments comparative relationships are traced between mita and the other great colonial exaction: the indigenous tribute system that for the region (Charcas) and period analyzed was under the crown jurisdiction. The comparison between the mita evolution and the tasas of tributes, allows to identify diverging trajectories. Regarding tributes, indigenous authorities reached their adaptation to the informed demographic decrease, lowering fiscal pressure. The contrary occurred with the mita obligations which remained almost unchanged. This article offers some interpretations that explain the unchanging phenomenon of mita allotments.
