In evaluating the economic history of Latin America it is tempting to apply theoretical models first developed for Europe. Recent literature dealing with Latin American development problems in their historical aspects, has often made grateful use of the terminologies of "feudalism" and "capitalism" in order to place the modern economic stage in its proper historical setting. The use of these terms, however, presumes an essential comparability of events and institutions in America and in Europe. Between 1500 and 1800 what was the nature of enterprise and trade in Hispanic America? Are concepts of "feudalism" and "capitalism" pertinent for the region? Did Latin America experience a "dependent" economic development throughout the colonial period? Properly speaking, Latin America in the colonial period was neither feudal nor capitalist; fruitful comparisons can be made with contemporary developments in the agrarian societies of Eastern Europe
