► THIRD CONDITIONAL SENTENCES
Estas oraciones condicionales (también llamadas 'conditional sentences type III' or 'unreal conditional sentences') tienen un verbo en pasado perfecto después de la conjunción 'if' y un verbo en condicional perfecto en la proposición principal (= main clause). La condición (= if-clause) puede estar al principio o al final de la oración.
➜ Third Conditional Sentences – Structure:
• If-clause (= conditional clause) ➙ Past perfect
• Main clause ➙ Conditional perfect = 'would' + 'have' + past participle of the main verb
➜ Estas oraciones se usan para hablar de situaciones irreales en el pasado que ya no se pueden alterar, es decir, de situaciones hipotéticas o imaginarias que no sucedieron.
➜ Las terceras condicionales pueden utilizarse para decir que nos arrepentimos de haber hecho algo, cuando presentamos excusas o cuando estamos regañando a alguien.
➜ El verbo auxiliar 'would' puede sustituirse por 'could' o 'might'.
➜ Al igual que en español, la condición (= if-clause) puede estar al principio o al final de la oración. Las reglas de puntuación también coinciden con las del español.
a. Si la proposición condicional va primero, se suele usar una coma para separarla de la oración principal. Por ejemplo:
• If he had gone to bed earlier, he wouldn't have been so tired.
➺ Si él se hubiera acostado más temprano, no habría estado tan cansado.
b. Si la proposición condicional aparece al final, la coma no es necesaria. Por ejemplo:
• He wouldn't have been so tired if he had gone to bed earlier.
➺ Él no habría estado tan cansado si se hubiera acostado antes.

• If you had studied harder, you would have passed the exam.
➺ Si hubieras estudiado más, habrías aprobado el examen.
