Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla was born in Guanajuato on May 8, 1753. His parents were Cristóbal Hidalgo y Costilla and Ana María Gallaga. At age 17 he became a teacher of Philosophy and Theology. In 1778 he was ordained Priest.

In the early hours of September 16, 1810, he launched the famous "Cry of Sorrows" haranguing the people to take up arms and fight against the Spaniards who supported Joseph Bonaparte as the new King of Spain.

The priest Hidalgo led a patriot army and organized a government in Guadalajara. Here he decreed the abolition of slavery and abolished Indian tributes.
