Education for inequality
We have often heard that education is the best mechanism for social
advancement, and that therefore education plays an essential role in reducing
social inequities. This statement, true in various democracies around the world, is
still not true in Colombia.
For example, among Colombian youths who took the renowned PISA tests in
2012, those who came from public education obtained on average 50 points less
than the student from private education. Likewise, those who did not have any year
of initial education obtained 34 points less than who did. And if she is a woman, in
the area of mathematics she gets on average 25 points less.
Given the above, in Colombia a young woman from popular sectors has, on
average, for the ninth grade, 109 points less than a high-level young man on his
math test.
In Colombia, a young woman from popular sectors has on average, for the ninth
grade, 109 points less than a high-level young man on his math test.
This result is equivalent to three less years of education, which is as much as to
say that although they are both in the ninth grade, the lowest-ranking woman has
already "lost" three years of schooling. It is as if she had only reached the sixth
grade, even though she has been in it for nine years. Thanks to the initial
education and the benefits of the higher sociocultural level of his family, in the first
grade of primary education the high-stratum child has an advantage of close to
forty points for the popular stratum child.
But the most serious thing is missing: the distance between the results increases
with the passing of the degrees, so that until now public education in Colombia has
failed to close the social gap. On the contrary, the distances increase with the
passage of time.
In other words: the unequal quality of Colombian education is increasing social
inequalities. It is as if we had two educational systems: one for the poor and the
other for the rich, and because of this, all young people tended to remain in a
social stratum similar to the one they were born with. In technical terms this is
called social immobility. Consequently, Colombia has a very low rate of educational
social mobility.
