“Used to” refers to past habits and states. If we say that somebody used to do something, we mean that some time ago he was in the habit of doing this, but he no longer does it now.
Past simple, on the other hand, describes something which happened at a definite point in time in the past.
EXAMPLES “USED TO”:
-I used to live with my mother
-I used to smoke
-She used to play videogames
-She used to have a pet
-We used to go out more
-It used to do something funny
-They used to be dating
-We used to be at college
-He used to drink milk
-She used to drive
EXAMPLES “SIMPLE PAST”:
-She was the girl who saved my life
-We went to the cinema yesterday
-I went to the mall two weeks ago
-They ate chocolate
-You bought this car in January
-We played videogames
-They played the guitar
-You flew yesterday
