Ask the children, What do you think plants need to grow and be healthy? Then tell them, We are going to do an experiment to find out if plants need light to grow. Have the group organize an experiment in which everyone participates.
Fold two wet paper towels and put them in two plastic bags. Add grass seeds to the bags and seal them.
Put a paper plate over one of the two bags, blocking the light from reaching the seeds. Leave the other bag exposed.

You can also try putting a bucket upside down in a grassy area outside. Ask the children to periodically check what happens to the grass under the bucket.
