Culture can be understood as everything we are, eat, think, dress,
etc., as well as the place in which we live. Our surroundings are part
of who we are. When they are affected, our culture can be affected
too. Sometimes this can happen because of natural disasters.
Earthquakes, landslides, floods, heat waves, fires, and other
disasters can affect or destroy monuments, archeological sites, and
landscapes. If these places are destroyed, which can be
representations of culture, people may feel that they have lost part
of their cultural identity forever. However, human beings have
always adapted and reshaped culture by adjusting to different
circumstances. Historically, large populations have moved away and
started again in new settlements, creating new customs and building
new monuments and houses. Other groups of people have stayed in
the same locations and adapted their lives to the risks caused by
natural disasters.
People experience great pain after natural disasters but the
resilience they show after the losses they face is also related to their
culture. This is because it is usually based on their beliefs and
religion. We can definitely say that the relationship between humans
and nature is essential in culture.
