El proceso de la meiosis ocurre solamente en las estructuras sexuales de los organismos encargados de la producción de los gametos. En el caso de los seres humanos son los óvulos y espermatozoides.
Normalmente una célula tiene 46 cromosomas, sin embargo, en éstos, sólo hay 26 cromosomas; que al unirse, harán 46. Y se formará un nuevo ser.

ES UNA DIVISION NUCLEAR DONDE SE REDUCE EL NUMERO DE CROMOSOMAS, PRODUCIENDO CUATRO CELULAS HIJAS, CON SOLO LA MITAD DE LA INFORMACION (CELULAS HAPLOIDES) LAS CUALES NO SON GENETICAMENTE IDENTICASUNAS A LAS OTRAS, SE EFECTUA POR MEDIO DE DOS DIVISIONES NUCLEARES,QUE SE LLAMAN:
