Tradition and custom both mean something that you do that is passed down through generations. They can mostly be used interchangeably and have no greatly noticeable difference.
However, "tradition" refers more to something special that people do in a culture or a family. "Custom" refers to something less belief-based and more like something that everyone does naturally or everyone does because it is simply the right thing to do.
For example, you would not say, "It is an American tradition to hold the door open for people entering buildings behind you." It sounds weird. It is though a custom to hold open a door. Custom is something that we do because everyone does it. It can also be used in this way, for example: "It is custom to wait for those in an elevator to exit before entering one." Tradition is something more emotional or specific most of the time, for example, "It is our family tradition to eat turkey on Christmas."
I hope that isn't too confusing. Like I said, the difference is small.
