Born in Greenock near the city of Glasgow, his father was a naval inventor and contractor, while his mother, Agnes Muirhead, came from a distinguished family and had a good education. Presbyterianism and they practiced both were active members of Covenanter movement. His grandfather, Thomas Watt, was a mathematics teacher and judge of the barony of Cartsburn.
His poor health during childhood prevented him from attending school regularly, it being educated mainly by his mother, but later attended Greenock grammar school. He showed great manual dexterity and an aptitude for mathematics, while not interested him Latin and Greek.
James Watt lived and worked in Glasgow and Birmingham. He was a key member of the Lunar Society. Many of his writings are preserved in the library of Birmingham. He died on August 25, 1819 in Heathfield, at his home in Handsworth, England, at the age of 83 years.
