Cooper's Hill races
Every year at Cooper's Hill in Gloucestershire,
England, people come to watch the cheese-
rolling races. The tradition goes back over two
hundred years. Each cheese, which looks like a
wheel and weighs 3,5 kilos, is rolled down the
steep hill. The runners go after the cheese, which
is given as a prize to the winner. Runners often
get hurt in the races, but nothing too serious
happens. There's always a good crowd for the
event, especially since it's free for spectators.
Between 1941 and 1954, due to food shortages,
cheese made of wood replaced real cheese.
1What shape is the cheese?
2How do we know the races can be dangerous?
3How much does it cost to watch the races?
4Why was a wooden cheese used for thirteen years?
