MARIE CURIE
Marie Curie was born in Warsaw, Poland, on November 7th, 1867. Her family name was Marie Sklodowska. She met her husband, Pierre Curie, in 1891 in Paris where she had arrived to study in the Sorbonne. Pierre found in her a woman capable of combining love with science and life. By that time Henri Becquerel had discovered X-rays and observed that uranium salts gave off radiation. Marie Curie was set to discover the origin of these emanations, and her husband supported and encouraged her. The research done by the Curies took four years, from 1899 to 1903, and finally they got one gram of radium bromide. Radium is a rare active metal which shines in the dark and when treated emits gas and produces heat, remaining unchanged. In 1904 the Curies. and Henri Becquerel received the Nobel Price of the Academy of Science lo of Stockholm. Marie Curie was the first woman to get a chair in the Parisian Sorbonne, after her husband's death. She died on July 4th, 1934 of leukaemia. It is believed that she was a victim of her own work, of the emanations from the element she discovered.
