A CHINESE FOLK STORY
A poor woman and her son _______ (live) in a village in China. Every day, the boy went to the mountains to

pieces. The boy’s mother told the boy to return it to the market. ‘Stand in the same place and wait for
someone to ask for it,’ she said.
The boy hurried back to the market. He had only been there for a few minutes when he ______ (see) a man
looking for something. He _______ (wear) beautiful clothes and looked like a rich man. He told the boy that
he had lost a bag. ‘Here,’ said the boy and showed him the one in his hand. Suddenly, the man became angry.

number. The boy said he hadn’t stolen the money but the man ________ ( - believe) him. They decided to see
the wisest man in the village.
‘How many gold pieces were in the bag? asked the wise man.

‘He is a thief’, said the rich man. ‘There were thirty gold pieces.’
The wise man thought for a moment. He believed the boy. Suddenly, he had an idea. He said to the rich
man, ‘Because your bag _______ (have) thirty gold pieces in it, this can not be your bag.’ He said to the boy,
‘As this isn’t the rich man’s, it’s now yours’.
